Bop It gameplay is predicated upon your efforts to match the commands issued in a timely manner by performing the task that is asked. Thus if the Bop It is to call out "Bop It!" then the player must quickly depress the "Bop It!" button, if the Bop It is to call out "Twist it!" then the player must quickly turn the "Twist it!" crank, and if the Bop It is to call out "Pull it!" then the player must quickly pull the "Pull It!" knob.

Bop It players' scores are announced at the end of game in which different tones represent different point values. The maximum Bop It score possible is 100. This style of score-reporting would later recur in the Bop It Extreme model, and the Zing It spin off.

The original Bop It game features three inputs — The "Bop it!" (a depressable button), the "Twist it!" (a twistable lever) and the "Pull it!" (a pullable handle) — and three game modes: Solo Bop, Vox Bop and Beat Bop.

"I've had the older version Bop it before, and thought I'd buy the New Bop It Download to give it a go. The New Bop It Download action gets interesting by involving hitting various body parts, specifically for party mode. I found Bop It Download easy to master following it's predesor and completed it in less than 20 attempts. New Bop It Download has 3 levels which you unlock as you progress. I think it would be difficult to play in party-mode for kids less than 10 years old. But for adults after a few drinks Bop It Download is fantastic fun! The music is annoying to anyone not playing, but there are 3 volume settings. Bop It Download is a great game to improve kids mental/sound/hand-coordination. The New Bop It Download unit itself is quite indestructable. I highly recommend it mainly because I'm a Bop-it fan"
